The Oscars are fucking stupid. Not just for this, obviously.

p sure the voldemort transformation is a cgi and makeup job tho

but stuff like the goblins? their transformations are made mostly, if not completely, out of makeup.

oh yeah I completely agree with the general statement of this post, with that being a very good example of why. However the example presented in the graphic isn’t the best they could have used.

The reason The Iron Lady won for best make-up was because of how effective the transformation of Meryl Streep to Margaret Thatcher was. Not only in the one instance that is present in the graphic above, but throughout the film. We see Margaret age, we see her develop wrinkles, folds, sagging skin, we see the use of make-up to convey this aging, a leaf borrowed out of the books of classic theatre or the more popular film comparison of Citizen Kane.
I’m under the assumption that The iron Lady won the oscar for two reasons. One, the effective portrayal of Margaret Thatcher down to the very last hair fold. And two, the effective aging of the character that kept everything above in mind and then some.
Going further as a fellow fan of Harry Potter, I loved the work that was done with Ralph Fiennes to cement the look of Voldemort. I don’t think people should think of this as a sleight against Harry Potter, it’s incredibly disheartening to see people get worked up over their favorite film or film series not winning anything and going on to basically talk crap about whatever film did win simply because “it beat my favorite movie >:(.”
Stop that.
