This is a question that all of us in the fandom receive quite often. So here are three definitive items which explain it fully to you, the curious and inquiring reader:

We strongly suggest that you read Andrew Hussie’s earlier works, at the very least the prior story Problem Sleuth. This may take you about a week or two. In doing so, you get a better grasp of the type of humor Hussie utilizes, thus a better appreciation and understanding of the many jokes in the current comic. Catching up on Homestuck will take longer. I hear anywhere from two weeks to two months. Your mileage may vary, depending on your reading speed and attentiveness.

We also suggest that as soon as you catch up, reread at your own leisure. Updates can be very context-heavy, so reading up on past pesterlogs are a very good idea.
